Cultural Miscommunication
Communication is an essential part of daily life. When we interact and establish conversations with others, we can have a lot of particular situations or difficulties because of miscommunication, especially between people of different cultures.
There are a plenty of examples that we can recognize as a cultural miscommunication. In Latin America people tend to be very kind and friendly, they don´t like to hurt your feelings, even they try to avoid confrontations or unpleasant feelings. But Americans have other kind of cultural communication, They are not so concious about the way that talk to others. They are a little more reserved, because of that, the conversations could be taken less interesting, maybe boring or without passion, even they communicate more directly and it can to offend sometimes. It is interesting to observe a conversation between people of these cultures so different. We will notice how the paradigms in communication change the course of the message and How it is received for the other person. Remember that the message implies words and gestures, it could be a benefit to express better our ideas or a real challenge. (How you see in the image in the body of the post)
In our TFL classes, we must to take seriously the way we communicate with our students and between them. Our classrooms could be a multicultural group and it is essential to know their cultures, customs and traditions to adapt the way to teach and communicate. Being aware of the kind of words, phrases and gestures we use in our classes will avoid uncomfortable moments and I am sure it can mark the difference for good.
Question to ponder:
Could you say some specific suggestion to our TFL classes in order to improve multicultural communication?
Thank you for visiting my post!!!

Hey Erica. I enjoyed your article, thank you! The last picture you shared made me laugh! It reminded me of my first few months in china when I kept my hair really long, it is also curly so I had a big afro, the Chinese people would always want to touch it and take pictures with me which I did not like hahaha. I think keeping an open mind and looking for similarities is a great starting point, we will find we have far more in common with each other than we thought when we start looking for them.
ResponderBorrarHi Erica! We really should take different culture seriously. We should perceive things with an open mind and try to understand it. Great post!
ResponderBorrarHello Erica! I like your blog post a lot. The first image you shared is a super good view of a lot of classic miscommunications in cultural differences. Personal space, gestures, words we use, etc. all cause a lot of confusion and hard feelings that are unnecessary.
