  Difference in manners

As part of our culture, we have ingrained a lot of customs or particular rules and we show them in our treat to others and in our conduct and actions. If we have the opportunity to travel to other countries, we can notice that some things that are normal in our culture is not so common there, eve it can be waird. If we are not sure about some rule or specific manner to do something, we must to act as discreetly as possible or we can be considered unrefined, gross or somebody with bad manners.

People, tend to misinterpret the situations where somebody is acting according the customs of their own place o culture, because of that it is important try to familiarize with the differences between cultures around the world, in this way we will avoid offend to others and be more tolerate.

If I think how can I translate this points and principles to our classrooms, I imagine a multicultural class where my students feel confidence and respect each other. It is essential as teachers that we can work in establish norms and rules together in order to avoid possible misunderstoods. It can be a good idea to be more consirated and and try to act in a proper manner.

Question to ponder:

* What could be the main challenge to have multicultural students with a lot of different manners to act and react? How could we improve it?

  1. Hello Erica, I like your article. Answering your question I think that all of the students should learn from one another in order to create a safe environment to learn. Teachers should learn from other cultures for understanding the diversity of students we can have, I consider that we should teach our students what we know about the subject.

  2. I liked how you said, that your student should feel respected and confident, I think it is a really important quality a classroom should have. To answer your question, I think the bigger problem would be that no great conflict was created, we all know differences exist, and sometimes that affects us and our culture, but we as teachers should teach our students (by example) how to respect and understand these differences.
    Thank you for sharing.
